WikiLeaks.org Held for Ransom, Needs Funding

WikiLeaks has temporarily suspended its operations, citing funding problems as the reason for why the site is no longer operationally available. Instead, the staff has decided to close the site while it focuses on its fundraising efforts.

Wikileaks is a website that published anonymous submissions and leaks of sensitive governmental, corporate, organizational, or religious documents, while attempting to preserve the anonymity and untraceability of its contributors. The site is of course a wiki (one of our fav’s), which brilliantly offers anonymous tip-offs and submissions regarding sensitive information. The closure comes as a bit of a suprise because the technical costs to actually run a wiki are relatively nominal, and as WikiLeaks’ home page suggests, most of the $600K needed will be spent on staffing – not the direct costs related to web hosting. As such it seems that WikiLeaks could have continued operations while launching its fundraising campaign. Wikileaks states in its website that it will resume full operation once the operational costs have been covered. Of course, had they done so, we probably wouldn’t be talking about WikiLeaks and its need for funds. Regardless, please consider helping fund the randsom note so that this terrific site can return to the mainstream.
